This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

IGNORING SCRIPTURE

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17 ESV)

As a former educator, I have met many adults who do not like to read. There are many college graduates who never read another book after they graduate. I have also met people who have proclaimed their faith in Christ and attend church regularly, however, they say they cannot focus long enough to read the Bible. They are absolutely dependent upon the good will of others to teach them the truth of the Scriptures.

There are many reasons people offer for ignoring reading the Bible for themselves and some of the excuses they give are pretty lame. They live their lives totally oblivious to many false teachings. They do not recognize the heresies that false teachers bring into the church because they lack first-hand knowledge of the Scriptures. (2 Peter 2:1 ESV) Some, who do read, rely on Christian fiction for their understanding of the basics or they may read the health and wealth gospel books written by false professors with spurious motives.

True Christians are sanctified in truth by the washing of the Word of God. (Ephesians 5:26 ESV) Christians must know how to rightly handle the Word of Truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV) They are called to live by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4 ESV) They hear the Word of God with eagerness, but examine the Scriptures to see if they have been taught the truth. (Acts 17:11 ESV)

Do not ignore this wonderful gift of God:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)

  2. I was a new Christians years ago, and at a Bible study. One woman in our discussion mentioned she was a 30 year Christian. The same conversation, she mentioned how she was amazed that people know how to find Scripture in the Bible related to each other. It’s hard to believe some Christians really do not read the Bible.
