This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

MEDICINE FOR THE BROKENHEARTED

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:17-18 ESV)

Have you ever suffered from a broken heart? Most people have on some occasion in their lives. Perhaps it occurred after the death of a family member; perhaps it was a divorce; maybe a devastating illness; or the loss of a job. A broken heart may happen because you were denied entrance into the university you had hoped to attend, or because someone you thought was your best friend has begun to ignore you in favor of a new friend. A broken heart may be simple or complex in its cause. None of us are exempt from suffering its effects. It may give us a feeling of hopelessness. Solomon wrote:

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, (Proverbs 13:12 ESV)

The MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY defines a “broken heart” as:

A state of extreme grief and depression.

Grief and depression tend to block all thoughts of hope. A broken heart may cause loss of direction and purpose. It causes us to think that maybe God is not greater than our circumstances. Yet, the Bible tells us:

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3 ESV)

Healing a broken heart often takes time. The key is trusting God. You may find it difficult to trust God with the care of your heart, but this is partly because we have difficulty trusting anyone with something so important to us. Nevertheless, we are loved by Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit dwells within us with power. You will be strengthened and healed by trusting in Him. Jesus said the following Old Testament verse pointed to Him and His ministry when He read it in the synagogue:

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the [BROKENHEARTED], to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; (Isaiah 61:1 ESV)

A broken heart may leave your life in disorder, but hope in God who is the source of your salvation. He is your inheritance; trust in Him. (Lamentations 3:24 ESV) Set your hope on the grace that was given you in Jesus Christ. Run to Christ for the hope that will sustain you, because He is the source of your healing. Only He can bring blessing from a broken heart.
