    This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

THE FAITH THAT SAVES

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)

There are many Christians who never know the assurance of their salvation because they do not believe they have been good enough to earn it. Such people have confused ideas about the meaning of grace and the role of faith and works.

Faith does not earn grace, but grace is the cause of faith. Good works are the product of true faith. Good works, however, do not earn you a place in heaven. Good works are a witness to your faith. Salvation through faith is the free gift of God. We do not earn it because we cannot earn it. In and of ourselves, we cannot even conjure up enough faith to deserve anything. However, God gives us faith and salvation by His merciful grace. We diminish the power of the gospel when we confuse this.

Faith is the bond that joins us to Jesus Christ and makes us partakers of His righteousness. Faith is not the great Physician, but it takes us to the right Doctor. Faith is not our Savior, but it gives us a relationship with the One who is. Faith brings us into covenant fellowship with God in Jesus Christ. The power of saving faith moves us to delight in this fellowship. It gives us a sure knowledge of God’s gracious favor toward us. Saving faith engenders trust in what God has revealed in His Word. Saving faith enables us to rest upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life.

By the grace of God I am saved today,
I will walk by faith in the narrow way;
I will trust His grace to preserve my soul,
I will rest secure while the billows roll.
(By the Grace of God, Barney E. Warren)
