This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

WHAT IS STRONG FAITH?

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” (Luke 17:5 ESV)

I think it is interesting to note here that Jesus responds to the statement above by telling His apostles they need faith “like a grain of mustard seed.” Jesus makes the point that even a small amount of faith may accomplish wonderful things if it is placed in God. One of the most important things we learn is that what we place our faith in matters most.

On the other hand, a faith that is placed in and preoccupied with the world will be destroyed. The kingdoms of man have come and gone, but only the kingdom of God is eternal. God does not lie or change His mind. He does what He says He will do. (Numbers 23:19 ESV) A faith anchored in Him will not fail.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

In the verse above we see that faith is the confidence that God will supply the good things for which we hope. Through faith, we delight in the anticipation of them because we are born of God’s Spirit and, therefore, heirs of the blessings for which we hope. Faith in God is effective in those who are born again. Matthew Henry describes faith in this manner:

It is a firm persuasion and expectation, that God will perform all He has promised to us in Christ. This persuasion gives the soul to enjoy those things now; it gives them a subsistence or reality in the soul, by the first-fruits and foretastes of them. Faith proves to the mind, the reality of things that cannot be seen by the bodily eye. It is a full approval of all God has revealed, as holy, just, and good. (Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary, 11:1-3)

Faith must be built upon the truth of the Bible. Faith comes by hearing God’s Word. (Romans 10:17) The Word of God is the Bible, which helps us to develop faith by reading and studying it. As we are transformed by the renewing of our minds our faith grows. (Romans 12:2 ESV) We cannot really have faith in a god we do not know or understand, so God has provided us with the Bible to correctly increase our faith.

Faith is putting our trust in Jesus Christ and in Him alone. In order to do that, we have to stop sitting on the wall between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of man. We must choose who we will serve. (Matthew 6:24 ESV) Faith relies upon God’s faithful Word and His promises, regardless of the current circumstances. Strong faith is not having faith in faith. It is having faith in God. After all, faith is only as good as where it is placed.
