This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

IMMEASURABLE BLESSINGS

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

blessings

I believe it is impossible for Christians to find themselves in such appalling circumstances – where the promises of God hold no encouragement to those who love God and obey Him. According to the verses above, God’s power gives everything needed for life and godliness. Christians are the beneficiaries of immeasurable blessings when they grow in the knowledge of and obedience to God. Through Jesus Christ, these precious and very great promises are given in order that the elect may participate in the divine nature and obtain holiness.

However many blessings we expect from God, His infinite liberality will always exceed all our wishes and our thoughts. (John Calvin)

We have a covenant in Christ’s blood to guarantee that the blessings promised by God will be completed for those who love and obey Him. Charles H. Spurgeon declares:

God’s promises are longer than life, broader than sin, deeper than the grave, and higher than the clouds. (Charles H. Spurgeon)

Do people really comprehend the abundance of blessings God offers to all who love and obey Him? I doubt it. If we are to understand the wealth of blessings offered to us by God, we must carefully read the Scriptures and pray. Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of Christians are practically illiterate when it comes to reading and understanding the Bible.

Therefore, know that the same God, who with great power raised Jesus Christ from the dead, has given us spiritual life when we were following the path of sin and dead in our transgressions. (Ephesians 1:3-10) He has set us on the good way to walk in it. (Jeremiah 6:16 ESV) The path God has now set before us may be difficult but He will bless us with the strength to walk it. We may encounter trouble along the way, but He will bless us with His comfort. We may be confused by what the future will hold, but God will bless us with wisdom. We may be in sickness or grief, but God will bless us with His healing and reassurance. When God calls, He supplies the blessings for the journey ahead.

You long to make us rich in You,
O sovereign Lord of all,
To lavish Your magnificence
On us, so weak and small.
We’re shamefully distracted from
Your riches unexplored
While You bathe us every moment in
The blessing of the Lord.
(“The Blessing of the Lord” by Ken Bible)
