This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

A HEART FOR GOD

With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! (Psalm 119:10 ESV)

Samuel A CainThe Christian faith teaches us that Christians are to be God-fixated; that is, savoring our satisfaction in God is a chief attribute of the Christian man or woman. The Christian’s life glorifies God and makes much of Jesus Christ paying the cost of our redemption. By grace through faith we become the children of God. By the Holy Spirit, we grow in righteousness that we may please God and be a witness to our neighbors.

A Christian who understands the principles of Christianity will live in constant awareness of God’s glory, and joy will be his companion. The desire to magnify God’s glory leads to living a holy life. We demonstrate our faith in God by our conduct. When we have a heart for God, we have a heart for others as well.

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39 ESV)

If we say we believe in God and He is supreme in our lives, then there should be an effect on the way we conduct our lives. The man with a heart for God becomes the embodiment of the moral nature of God. The man with a heart for God will not compromise with the natural mind which leads to sin, but he looks to Christ in order to be conformed to Him. We know how God wants us to live because we know the Bible and constantly study God’s Word. Studying the Bible gives us wisdom and our minds are renewed (Romans 12:2) in order for us to begin to think like God thinks and understand His will.

People with a heart for God are completely sold out to do the will of our Father in heaven. The Christian heart is concerned with the desires of God’s heart. The heart of a Christian is humble because he understands his need for the grace and mercy of God. It is a heart that trusts God in all circumstances. People with a heart for God are willing to give it all up for God – even their own lives.

One priority of those who have a heart for God is to do everything God wants us to do. God’s work comes first. Christians with a heart for God go beyond what is required. They are completely wrapped up in God’s work. They have discovered that God’s work is a work of love and they have found joy in it.
