This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

ARE YOU THANKFUL?

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV)

Samuel A CainCan you believe that Christians are commanded to be thankful in all circumstances? (1 Thessalonians 5:18) If you are in the middle of troubles and worries, this command seems strange in our culture which judges matters according to whether they make you feel good or not.

Thankfulness honors God and strengthens our faith. We can’t be in a right relationship with God without a spirit of gratitude. Thankfulness must be practiced until it is a habit. There are times when we all think the world is too hard on us. Thankfulness is a soothing balm for distress and anxiety.

It is important to be thankful for what we have. We cannot possibly have everything we desire, but it is important to be thankful for what God has given us. When times are bad, be thankful they are not worse. Someone is always going through a more miserable experience than you. Be thankful for even the small mercies you have received.

Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! (Psalm 106:1 ESV)

Be thankful for the blessings yet to come. The greatest of these is eternal life with Christ. “Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15 ESV) “Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!” (Psalm 95:2 ESV)

You become thankful by being thankful. “Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!” (Psalm 107:15 ESV) Make thankfulness a habit. Meditate upon the blessings you have and thankfulness will become natural to your heart.

My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed. (Psalm 71:23 ESV)
