This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

IN LIGHT OF ETERNAL TRUTH

Samuel A CainJesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 ESV)

God created the universe: He created man; He is the creator of time; He is the sovereign cause of whatever occurs; He is the reason for the existence of both the visible and the invisible; He is eternal truth and He is immutable. God is the reason that we exist. Jesus Christ is the only way to God. Jesus is the light of the world. He is the very embodiment of truth, and in Him we should look for truth. Jesus proclaimed that “I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life” (John 14:6). In and through Christ we see truth. A simple definition for “truth” is: “Truth is!”

It was Col. Nathan R. Jessep, in the movie A Few Good Men, who gave us the classic motion picture line: “You can’t handle the truth!” I believe this quote may be applied to more than a few lines of script in a movie. It describes the state of mind many of us have when we are confronted with a reality-hardened truth that we hoped to never face. You may wish something were not so, but truth cannot be waved away with the swish of a magic wand.

As a matter of fact, many have become so uncomfortable with the idea of truth, they have declared truth to be personal. This allows each individual to be the arbiter of his own truth. This form of relativism denies the existence of ultimate right and wrong. Everyone sets their own rules to live by. Imagine a world where everyone does what is right in their own eyes. (Judges 21:25 ESV) Would this be utopia or hell?

Unfortunately, what I call “Truth Avoidance Syndrome” (TAS) has also infected many churches. Many have deserted the Gospel altogether, while others ignore any unpopular truths they find in the Bible. The integrity of God’s Word loses authority when taken from its context. This is the result of TAS.

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)

The Christian, however, is committed to finding the truth even when it is an unpleasant truth.  Knowing and walking in truth is basic to a consistent Christian life. Paul declares, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)

roadsMature Christians develop a well-ordered mind to understand and defend the truth of God.  One must reeducate the mind (Romans 12:2) to truly live the Christian life.  Thus, the preacher or teacher must present the whole truth of the Bible and not be ashamed of any part. The preacher must not be apprehensive of offending the false ideas adopted by many in His congregation. (Romans 9:33, Matthew 11:6, and Matthew 15:12) The Gospel is the power of God for their salvation. (Romans 1:16) The Word of God stands forever. (1 Peter 1:25)

Eternal truth is not a treasure found at the end of all paths. Only one leads to heaven, while all others lead to hell. The uncompromised truth of the Scriptures is essential to salvation. “No one comes to the Father except through me.”   Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6 ESV) Jesus also said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.” (John 10:7 ESV) How can we disregard this great salvation? (Hebrews 2:3) How can we ignore the eternal TRUTH of God?
