This year I will be sharing brief excerpts from the articles, sermons, and books I am currently reading. My posts will not follow a regular schedule but will be published as I find well-written thoughts that should be of interest to maturing Christian readers. Whenever possible, I encourage you to go to the source and read the complete work of the author.

The Inch Turns In To A Mile

Thomas Manton

Quoting Thomas Manton:

If you yield to Satan in the least, he will carry you further and further, till he has left you under a stupefied or terrified conscience: stupefied, till thou hast lost all thy tenderness. A stone at the top of a hill, when it begins to roll down, ceases not till it comes to the bottom. Thou thinkest it is but yielding a little, and so by degrees are carried on, till thou hast sinned away all thy profession, and all principles of conscience, by the secret witchery of his temptations.

The Prosperity Of Government

William Penn

Quoting William Penn (Founder of Pennsylvania):

[I]t is impossible that any people of government should ever prosper, where men render not unto God, that which is God’s, as well as to Caesar, that which is Caesar’s. (Source: Fundamental Constitutions of Pennsylvania, 1682)

The Absolute Truth

Gavin Beers

The Word of God teaches us that Jesus Christ is the revealed truth. This is not a hidden mystery. God has been revealing this from the very beginning of history. God is revealing this truth. Gavin Beers explains more in the article below:

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

What of His claims? All of the things He said He would do, all of the things that He said He was – have they all died? You see, it would appear so. But yet, in His death He is triumphing. In His death He is securing the redemption of all the Father gave unto Him. When we look at our culture today and we think that somehow Christ is not winning. We need to remember this because even in our age, our Lord Jesus Christ is triumphing and He is well able to confound the wisdom of the wise and to bring to nothing the understanding of the foolish. Indeed, when we cast our eye around our culture and we see all of this prevailing confusion, we can come to this conclusion that there has maybe never been a better time for you and me to preach the supremacy of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Truth, than today.

I ask you to start thinking in these kinds of terms: Christ is reigning; Christ is Lord. Nothing is happening in this world that Christ is not sovereign over. The conflict rages but Christ is winning and Christ shall win. If you don’t believe me just pick up the Book of Revelation and read it from beginning to end. Nearly on every page you can come to this conclusion: Christ wins! Christ wins! Christ wins! In Him, His church likewise wins. . . .

He says unto the twelve disciples as He speaks to them here that He is the truth. If we read that statement aright we can come to no other conclusion but that this is no insignificant claim. You see Jesus is not here saying that He is one form of truth; He is saying I am the truth. That is, I am the truth absolutely. “I am the absolute truth.” Then if we go another step further and we consider this statement we will recognise that it must be interpreted as a claim of the Lord Jesus Christ to be God. . . .

Jesus Christ is saying, “I am the absolute truth”; Christ is saying [this] to His disciples, “I am the divine truth”. Because this One who speaks in John 14, 6 is none other than God manifested in the flesh, in whom are hid all of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. We need to recognise that if we are ever to find truth, or if we are ever to understand truth in its proper context, we will never do it outside of the Lord Jesus Christ, because our Lord Jesus Christ is the very originator of truth. He is the One who is the centre of all truth and all reality. . . . (Sermon: “Christ the Truth”)
