Who You Hang Out With Matters

From: The Desk of Jeff Jacoby

More and more loudly, Obama’s defenders have been insisting that to call attention to [Obama’s] deplorable associations is to engage in ridiculous and unfair “guilt by association.”

But it isn’t ridiculous to question the values of a candidate whose political career got its start in the Chicago living room of violent traitors like Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, who have never expressed remorse for the brutal crimes they committed in the Weather Underground. There is nothing unfair about wondering how Obama could have worshipped for 20 years in Wright’s church, yet never objected to the fanatic pastor’s virulent messages: that AIDS was created by the US government as an instrument of genocide, that America is the “US of KKKA,” that the 9/11 slaughter was “America’s chickens coming home to roost.”

Guilt by association? Not when the associations have such deep roots or raise such troubling questions about Obama’s character and judgment. It was only in the heat of a presidential campaign that Obama finally repudiated his alliances with Ayers, Wright, and Rezko. It isn’t irresponsible to ask what those associations tell us about a man poised to be the next president of the United States. It would be irresponsible not to.

Have We Done All That Could Be Done For America?

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” — Abraham Lincoln

“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children (America), the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children’s children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.” — Ronald Reagan

“Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, justice, truth, sincerity, and hardihood — the virtues that made America.” — Teddy Roosevelt

An Election Prayer For Righteousness

O Lord, grant that wicked and evil influences will be weak and impotent in their efforts at bringing down the candidates for election. Usher into authority those who are committed to leading with righteousness. –Proverbs 25:5 (remove the wicked from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.)

The Polling Data Is Friendly To Democrats

According to Ann Coulter, in 1976 Jimmy Carter narrowly beat Gerald Ford 50.1 percent to 48 percent. And yet, on Sept. 1, Carter led Ford by 15 points. In 1980, Ronald Reagan beat Carter by nearly 10 points, 51 percent to 41 percent. In a Gallup Poll released days before the election on Oct. 27, it was Carter who led Reagan 45 percent to 42 percent.

In 1984, Reagan walloped Walter Mondale 58.8 percent to 40 percent, — the largest electoral landslide in U.S. history. But on Oct. 15, The New York Daily News published a poll showing Mondale with only a 4-point deficit to Reagan, 45 percent to 41 percent.

In 1988, George H.W. Bush beat Michael Dukakis by a whopping 53.4 percent to 45.6 percent. A New York Times/CBS News Poll on Oct. 5 had Bush leading by a statistically insignificant 2 points — 45 percent to 43 percent. In 1992, the polls had Clinton 12 to 15 points ahead, but he won by only 5.3 points.

In 1996, Bill Clinton beat Bob Dole 49 percent to 40 percent. And yet on Oct. 22, 1996, The New York Times/CBS News Poll showed Clinton leading by a massive 22 points, 55 percent to 33 percent. In 2000, the New York Times/CBS News Poll on Oct. 3, 2000, showed Gore winning by 45 percent to 39 percent.

There seems to be a tendency by media polling to over-estimate the votes favorably inclined toward democrats. Not once did this happen in regard to republicans.

A Liberal Democratic Government

According to WSJ.com, if Barack Obama wins the White House on November 4 and Democrats consolidate their Congressional majorities, we may see a filibuster-proof Senate. The Senate would then become like the House and would be able to pass whatever the democratic left wants.

“Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven’t since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s. If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on. . . .

“Mr. Obama wants to build a public insurance program, modeled after Medicare and open to everyone of any income. According to the Lewin Group, the gold standard of health policy analysis, the Obama plan would shift between 32 million and 52 million from private coverage to the huge new entitlement. Like Medicare or the Canadian system, this would never be repealed.

“The commitments would start slow, so as not to cause immediate alarm. But as U.S. health-care spending flowed into the default government options, taxes would have to rise or services would be rationed, or both. . . .

“One program certain to be given right of way is “card check.” Unions have been in decline for decades, now claiming only 7.4% of the private-sector work force, so Big Labor wants to trash the secret-ballot elections that have been in place since the 1930s. The “Employee Free Choice Act” would convert workplaces into union shops merely by gathering signatures from a majority of employees, which means organizers could strong-arm those who opposed such a petition. . . .

“Taxes will rise substantially, the only question being how high. Mr. Obama would raise the top income, dividend and capital-gains rates for ‘the rich,’ substantially increasing the cost of new investment in the U.S. More radically, he wants to lift or eliminate the cap on income subject to payroll taxes that fund Medicare and Social Security. This would convert what was meant to be a pension insurance program into an overt income redistribution program. . . .

“A tax-and-regulation scheme in the name of climate change is a top left-wing priority. Cap and trade would hand Congress trillions of dollars in new spending from the auction of carbon credits, which it would use to pick winners and losers in the energy business and across the economy. . . .

“A liberal supermajority would move quickly to impose procedural advantages that could cement Democratic rule for years to come. One early effort would be national, election-day voter registration. This is a long-time goal of Acorn and others on the “community organizer” left and would make it far easier to stack the voter rolls. . . .”

Other left-wing goals include shutting down talk radio and other voices of the political right; ending the imprisonment of terrorists at Guantanamo; subjecting the Internet to intrusive regulation; the expansion of hate-crime laws to limit free speech; giving the United Nations more authority over American policy decisions; the environmental lobby will be empowered to block any practical plan for energy independence; and there will be a vast expansion of government. On November 4, the American citizen could get more “change” than he has ever envisioned.

The Savings Tax

From: The Desk of Gary Bauer

Here’s a story I bet many of you have missed: Liberal Democrats in Congress want to take away your 401(K) plan and impose a new “savings tax.” Liberals don’t like 401(K) plans because there’s just too much freedom involved. Not only are you free to participate or not, but in most cases you are free to choose where to invest your money. In addition, you get a tax break, and liberals don’t like that either.

Congressional hearings were held on the new “savings tax” three weeks ago, which calls for a new tax equal to five percent of your salary. Those funds will be invested in government bonds that are “guaranteed” to yield three percent per year. But notice the imposed “equality of results” in this plan. Everyone is guaranteed the same return. You have no opportunity to earn more.

This is just another way liberals intend to use the power of Big Government to redistribute wealth. You will no longer be free to use your own money how you choose. Liberals will tell you how much of your money you get to keep, how much of your money they will “spread around” to other people and even how you invest it.

False Prophets Do Not Require Repentance

Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Martyn Lloyd-Jones

From: The Desk of Martyn Lloyd-Jones . . .

The preaching and teaching of a false prophet does not emphasize repentance in any real sense. It has a very wide gate leading to salvation and a very broad way leading to heaven. You need not feel much of your own sinfulness; you need not be aware of the blackness of your own heart. You just “decide for Christ” and you rush in with the crowd, and your name is put down, and is one of the large number of ‘decisions’ reported by the press. It is entirely unlike the evangelism of the Puritans and of John Wesley, George Whitefield and others, which led men to be terrified of the judgment of God, and to have an agony of soul sometimes for days and weeks and months. John Bunyan tells us in his book Grace Abounding that he endured an agony of repentance for eighteen months. There does not seem to be much room for that today.

Repentance means that you realize that you are a guilty, vile sinner in the presence of God, that you deserve the wrath and punishment of God, that you are hell-bound. It means that you begin to realize that this thing called sin is in you, that you long to get rid of it, and that you turn your back on it in every shape and form. You renounce the world whatever the cost, the world in its mind and outlook as well as its practice, and you deny yourself, and take up the cross and go after Christ. Your nearest and dearest, and the whole world, may call you a fool, or say you have religious mania. You may have to suffer financially, but it makes no difference. That is repentance.

The false prophet does not put it like that. He “heals the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly”, simply saying that it is all right, and that you have but to “come to Christ”, “follow Jesus”, or “become a Christian”. (Studies in the Sermon on the Mount)
